Play by Tomáš Loužný and Site-Specific Production by MeetFactory Theatre: Ecstasy

  • Prague 5
  • Barrandov

"My beauty is my curse."

The Barrandov Terraces pool serves as the backdrop for the experimental film Ecstasy by Gustav Machatý (1932), where Hedy Lamarr's stellar career took off after she became the first woman in film history to appear nude, causing a worldwide scandal. She spent the last 35 years of her life in seclusion, sadly and alone.

She was considered one of the greatest stars of the silver screen, labeled the most beautiful woman in the world. She was the model for Disney's Snow White. She was also very intelligent, with an interest in technology, and many credit her with contributions to several scientific inventions, including the technology that became the basis for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. She supposedly invented the pull-out tissue box, among other things. She had six husbands, earned and spent a vast amount of money, tried her hand at film production, and loved talking on the phone, sometimes for up to 18 hours a day.

Although her fame was immense in the late 1930s and early 1940s, her name is now largely forgotten, much like the faded glory of the Barrandov Terraces. Her complex personality inspired Tomáš Loužný's play and the site-specific production by MeetFactory Theatre. In the abandoned pool, three extraordinary actresses come together to explore questions of beauty and its perception in the endlessness of its decay.
